We have been working on the idea of developing a wristwatch based on the "real" watch in the dashboard of the 113 series (Mercedes-Benz 230SL, 250SL & 280SL") for several years. We have tested the idea with several vintage Mercedes models, including the Mercedes-Benz 500K from 1936. In the end, we decided on the watch from the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL and named the watch after the car's nickname "Pagoda".
We had several goals in the development of the watch
- the clock should follow the design of the clock in the dashboard of the "pagoda" as closely as possible
- the watch should be authentic, i.e. we deliberately did not use any technology that was not yet available in 1993 or only available in very limited quantities, such as quartz and automatic movements.
- we did not want a second hand and a date display, because the original clock in the dashboard does not have these functions (alternative: we did without second hand and date display, because the original clock in the
dashboard does not have these functions)
- we wanted a watch "MADE IN GERMANY"
- we wanted a watch that was as flat as possible. With a thickness of 9.9 mm we have achieved this (This we have achieved)
